Datum 18 – 19 Oktober 2019
Vergaderplek :  Vlootmuseum, St. George’sstraat, Simonstad

Daar is vele ander moontlikhede. Daar sal OOP sessies wees waar ander onderwerpe aangebied word.

Vriendelike groete

Die uwe

“Water and Cultural History “

Arrangements for the national congress are in full swing. We would like to remind you of the following particulars regarding the conference:

Theme: WATER
Date: 18 – 19 October 2019
Venue: Naval Museum, St. George’s Street, Simon’s Town

Water as natural resource influences every aspect of human existence, from agricultural and industrial development to cultural and religious values embedded in society. The need for and use of water is the driving force behind the progress of civilization. Water is a source of inspiration in all cultures. People have developed spiritual and religious values associated with water. Cultural diversity plays a key role in the way people perceive, appreciate and manage water.

We announce “water and cultural history “ as the main theme of our congress and would like to include special sessions on this theme in our programme. Below are some suggestions of topics dealing with water (remember that your paper must preferably be linked to some aspect of cultural history):

Water and material culture: °The water cycle (rain, surface water, groundwater) / °Water infrastructure (dams, canals, pipelines, irrigation schemes, etcetera) / °Water in agriculture / °Water at home and in the garden / °Oceans, the sea, ships, shipping, navies, shipwrecks / °Rivers and waterways

Water and immaterial culture: °The symbolic meaning of water / °Water as life / °Water as threat (drought, storms, floods) / °Water in religion / °Water and place names / °Water and language / °Water in literature / °Water in traditional music

There are many other possibilities. Please try and present something related to the main theme. However, the congress will not deal exclusively with this theme. You have a free choice of topics for your paper. There will be OPEN sessions where other themes may be addressed.

We would like to encourage our members and others who are interested to attend the congress. We expect papers that will inspire lively discussion. There is an excursion and a congress dinner. There will be ample time for conversation (professional and otherwise) and to socialize.

Should you plan to present a paper, please send the title and abstract (maximum 200 words) to Celeste Rossouw by 30th of April 2019.

We’ll try and keep the conference fee as low as possible.

Yours sincerely

Celeste Rossouw, Co-ordinator
